Reflecting on My First Assignment: Embracing the Challenge

Starting Assignment 1 was a bit daunting, and I found myself slipping into procrastination—a habit I knew all too well. To break the cycle, I gave myself a firm talking-to and decided to focus on what I truly wanted to pursue: becoming a documentary (perhaps travel) photographer. With that in mind, I chose a route that aligned with this goal.

The Plan

For my assignment, I decided to document the walk from Sham Shui Po to Jordan, a path I had taken many times before. To prepare, I walked part of the route without my camera, simply observing what I should focus on documenting. This approach helped remove the pressure of having a camera in hand, allowing me to better understand the elements I wanted to capture. While human interaction varied on the actual day, I had a strong sense of the static aspects I wanted to highlight.

Key Areas of Focus

  • Buildings: I captured the architectural details and character of the area.
  • Small Details: I documented outlets, signs, and shop displays that added to the neighborhood’s unique feel.
  • People and Their Interaction with the Environment: I observed how people engaged with their surroundings.

With this plan in place, I took action and brought this vision to life.
