After refining my initial selections for the Kowloon side assignment, I faced an unexpected challenge: finding the right balance between capturing people and detailing the area’s unique character. This task proved to be more complex than I initially anticipated. Although I have a clear sense of what I enjoy visually, articulating this instinct into a cohesive series of images has been difficult.
My aim was to blend human elements with intricate details to vividly illustrate what I find fascinating about Kowloon. Despite my efforts, I feel that the final set could be improved. The challenge lies in balancing the amount of detail versus the focus on people shots. At present, the assignment is represented in the contact sheet above and is ready for submission to my tutor for further feedback.
One particular area where I struggled was in engaging with the subjects. For instance, the market shot (picture 6) suffers from being too distant and having a distracting background. This distance detracts from the potential impact of the image, making it less effective in conveying the vibrancy of the market scene.
On a more positive note, I believe that pictures 10 and 12 may be among the strongest in the set. They seem to capture the essence of Kowloon more effectively.
