The Light of the Night
Statement of Intent
Brassaï once said, “The light I have at night is magnificent. I prefer it to natural light. You should come one night to see it.” Nowhere is this more true than in Hong Kong.
Due to Hong Kong’s latitude, daylight fades quickly, and for much of the year, the sun sets fully by 6 p.m. This early sunset, however, offers the city the chance to shine under its abundant artificial light.
My goal has been to capture the everyday essence of Hong Kong as it is illuminated by this light. Initially, I called the project “Natural Artificial Light,” but the focus is on documenting the city I see during my daily commute—not the iconic tourist spots or city-center neon signs.
