A1 EYV Tutor Feedback

The feedback I received from Simon, my tutor, was that while I had some good individual images, they didn’t work cohesively as a set. Instead, they were more of an eclectic collection of whatever caught my eye that day. I think this feedback is spot on—my images lack focus and cohesion. It has been suggested that I visit more galleries to deepen my appreciation of the work, and to think more carefully about what I want to convey through a particular set of images.

I’ve grown accustomed to simply shooting what I see on my outings and then posting the results in an album on Facebook. Simon suggested that I revisit my original set of contact sheets, look for a theme that genuinely interests me, and then rework the assignment from there.

Since I’m a street photographer at heart (which is pretty much how my first assignment turned out), Simon also recommended I research the work of the following photographers to help guide my approach:

  • Bruce Gilden
  • Bruce Davidson’s Subway Series
  • Joel Meyerowitz
  • Philip-Lorca diCorcia
