Assignment 5: Feedback, Refinements, and New Perspectives
I was thrilled to receive my feedback from Simon, my tutor, yesterday. This course has truly been a journey, and Simon’s comments were a powerful reminder of the progress I’ve made. His feedback was both positive and constructive, offering insights into how I can improve my work while also encouraging me that my assignment has gone well overall.
Simon’s feedback has been invaluable, not just in suggesting images for reconsideration, but also in guiding me on how to present my work more effectively. One of his key points was about the sequence of images in my set. While I thought I had clearly communicated the journey across the harbor on the ferry, Simon’s comments made me realize there’s still work to be done in refining the presentation.
The original flow of images was intended to guide the viewer through the story of the ferry journey, from the stars on the funnel of the boats to the timetable showing the direction of travel, and finally the ferry itself. However, upon reflection, Simon’s point about the final image of the ferry made me reconsider its place in the set. I agree that it’s a familiar image for anyone who has visited Hong Kong, and in hindsight, it may not be necessary to reinforce the sense of location in the way I originally intended.
Regarding Image 5, Simon suggested it didn’t provide anything unique about the Star Ferry, and I completely agree. This image is now a candidate for replacement, as it doesn’t contribute as strongly to the overall narrative.
As for Image 6, I understand Simon’s comment, but to me, this image has more depth than just the signage. The lights from Hong Kong Island in the background help to set a sense of place that ties the set together. Image 7 also illustrates the “normalness” of the passengers on the ferry, which I believe was a key point I wanted to convey—the ferry is a practical means of transport for everyday people, not a tourist attraction.
Moving forward, my next step is to refine the selection of images. There were a few images I originally hesitated to leave out, and I’ll revisit those as potential candidates for inclusion. I will also re-evaluate the presentation style and incorporate captions to provide context, helping to guide the viewer through the set.
Additionally, I’ll be revisiting Exercises 5.2 and 5.3 to make the necessary revisions, ensuring that every aspect of my coursework is in line with my growth as a photographer.
I’m excited to take these steps to polish my assignment and to continue refining my approach as I move forward in the course
