Lamma Island by Drone. Until recently i was a resident of of Lamma Island one an Outlying Island of Hong Kong. It is only 25 minutes away from Central but that 25 minutes step you have in time to when Hong Kong was just a small fishing outpost in the south of China.
It is a popular spot for expat to live who want to avoid the hustle and bustle of city life once they have left work. This is because Lamma Island offers what could be described as countryside or village life within the reach of the City. Once you step off the ferry at Yung Shue Wan you are in a different world, the anonymous city life of Hong Kong has gone you are in a small community, like Cheers, a place where everyone know your name, where your favourite beer is poured at you walk through the door of the pub.
Lamma Island was a good place to fly my drone, not that i often got time what with work commitment and my epic commute – the major downside of Lamma Island for me ( more of that later). For drone flying it is quite enough that you won’t destube too many people, there is varied things to shoot and even the police are friendly. Once I was flying my drone on Power Station Beach and i saw a policeman cycling towards me, I instictively thought oh no what have I done, but as he approached he was smiling ask if the drone i was flying was a DJI, I said yes a DJI Mavic, he responded that he had a DJI Phantom 3 and wished his job as policeman gave more free time to fly it. He then happily cycled off down the beach.
Above a some of the better images I took on Lamma Island, ultimately i moved away from Lamma Island for a couple of reasons, I’m a big City Boy at heart, i grew up in Leeds and lived for 6 years in the Heart of Causeway Bay. The quieter style of Lamma was nice but not 100% for me and also the commute – while i said eariler in this post that it is 25 minutes by ferry from central where the majority of expats work – I wasn’t a typical expat.
I was working as an ESL teacher in Lohas Park, and with my 20 minute walk from Hung Shing Yeh on Lamma Island to the ferry, 25 minutes on the Ferry, then various MTR train it took 1hour 30mins to arrive at my classroom and well over 2 hours on the return journey due to ferry timings. 3 and a half commute seriously eats into your free-time to do anything other that listen to podcasts.
